Nestled amidst a steep pine forest, a remarkable architectural endeavor emerges overlooking the waters of New Zealand's Lake Wakatipu. Chosen for its unparalleled views of the lake and surrounding mountain ranges, the site was selected by the owners seeking a haven for extended family gatherings and as a place to spend as much time as possible in nature.
Project Type: Residential Home
Location: Queenstown, New Zealand
Architecture: Mason & Wales
Photography: Reagen Butler
The architectural directive called for a contemporary interpretation of a mountain aesthetic, with an emphasis on stone, timber, and glass. The architecture studio Mason and Wales created a house with a gable form that follows the contours of the site, running east to west, and firmly embeds the building into the landscape. Floor-to-ceiling glazing provides plenty of natural light into the building and offers framed views from every room.
OUTDOOR LIVING ALL YEAR 'ROUND
A large loggia extends out from the living area, complete with built-in heating and a large stone fireplace, providing a comfortable space throughout the cold winters. Tucked into the hillside, a sunny, sheltered courtyard is home to the outdoor kitchen. An impressive concrete and timber bench, with a sink and bar seating, cleverly mirrors the indoor kitchen island and is inevitably where all the family and guests congregate.
BUILT TO LAST
The centerpiece is a built-in Series 9 48” DCS grill, with its 304-grade stainless steel construction able to withstand the harsh elements of the site and sit well in this modern mountain setting. It's positioned to give the cook a commanding view out across the outdoor living space and onto the lake beyond.
The architects used robust and honest materials of concrete and weathered timber for the outdoor bench which both complements the architecture and landscape, and is also highly functional for food preparation and placing hot items directly on the surface.
ENTERTAINING AT SCALE
The connection and flow between the indoor and outdoor kitchens allow the homeowners to use the grill for small quick meals just as easily as for hosting large-scale gatherings. And with the abundance of local fish and game, the different cooking systems, such as charcoal, rotisserie and sear get plenty of use.
As the sun sets behind the rugged peaks of the Southern Alps, the fires are lit, the table is set, and this home really comes into its own.
